Sant'Elpidio a Mare is a medieval town rich in culture and history. In the historic center, in Piazza Matteotti, you can admire the Torre Gerosolimitana, 28 meters high and the Church of Mercy, which houses two organs from the 1700s, still protagonists of one of the major European concert events today (some names of the events? ).

Walking in the small and characteristic streets of the town you can find small clubs, restaurants and inns to enjoy a nice evening with the flavors of local and Marche products. Also not to be missed is a visit to the basilica of Santa Croce, in the hamlet of Casette d'Ete, built at the end of the 9th century.

Recently, an important exhibition space has been created which is entirely devoted to the universe of shoes: THE MUSEUM OF FOOTWEAR, where the evolution of the shoe and its processing from the first approaches to the most recent productions is exhibited.

You cannot miss the historical appointment with the first historical re-enactment of the Marche, "THE CONTESA DEL SECCHIO", which takes place annually every second Sunday in August since 1953: one of the most important and spectacular historical re-enactments in Italy, but above all the more original. According to the legend, Sant'Elpidio a Mare suffered from the lack of water and, to avoid the daily uproar of women at the well in the square, a game was held between the four Contradas of the city: it was established that whoever had repeatedly hit the well with a leather ball would be the first to draw water. Thus was born the game of the Contesa del Secchio, with over 800 figures in splendid and faithful medieval costumes and the historic center magically transported into the Middle Ages.
